NP SDAR Director Ms Sylvia Ler Speech
President, Mr Lau Kim San, NAA Malaysia. Illustrious alumni of NAA Malaysia. Ladies & Gentlemen Good evening
It is my honour and privilege to attend this mementous occasion of the 20th Anniversary celebration of the NAA Malaysia. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am the newly appointed Director, Student Development & Alumni Relations (SDAR). I took over the role from Mr Mun Kwok On wef 1 Oct this year. Mr Mun sends his warmest regards. He is now Senior Advisor overseeing Partnership Development in NP, an area which leverages especially on his talents in networking and establishing strategic partners for NP.
Although I am about 3 months old as Director, I have been with NP for 25 years. I am happy to be here with Mr Jeffrey Yang, Senior Advisor at SDAR. Jeffrey was also the previous General Manager of NAA Singapore.
We are really honoured to join in celebrating your 20th Anniversary, congratulations! Our Principal, Mr Clarence Ti, has asked us to convey his heartiest congratulations as well.
As you know, NP celebrated its 50th year two years ago. I met some of you when you all joined us at the NP50 Alumni homecoming on 3 May 2013. Thank you again for supporting your alma mater.
It is always wonderful to know that we have alumni across the Causeway who are so proud and passionate to be associated with Ngee Ann. I have read about the great work done by NAA-M’sia over the years including practice of philanthropy by donating to local schools, providing scholarships, promoting networking for businesses and NP. Would like to commend all of you and your good work. We are proud of each of you.
Please allow me now share with you some updates in Singapore.
2015 is Singapore’s Jubilee Year where we celebrate 50 years of independence. There are many activities all year round, including at the Polytechnic itself.
We continue to be the top Polytechnic of choice in Singapore this year, with the highest number of first choice applicants, and attracting the highest number of top scorers at the GCE ‘O’ level exams, i.e. those scoring 10 points or less.
The campus continues to be rejuvenated and upgraded to meet the needs of our students.
For example, Mechanical Engineering block has just completed its renovations and has a new look to its façade. Behind the glass front is a Super Skyhawk fighter plane, newly retired from the Republic of Singapore Air Force, and a 2-seater trainer aeroplane. Outside is the RSAF helicopter, also newly retired. This was donated by the government to promote Aerospace Technology in Singapore.
We also have a new Block 22 which houses a 1,100 seat canteen, an indoor Sports Hall which accommodates 2 basketball courts and is fully air conditioned, as well as 3 tennis courts on the roof. It also has student areas, study pods and discussion rooms.
The familiar Block 1 or the Admin Block will be under-going renovations early next year which will change the way the campus looks when you drive in. We hope to share updates with you next year.
All these are done to dovetail with our vision of the Hallmarks of an NP student, which are A Passionate Learner - Learning for Life A Big-Hearted Person - Serving Beyond Self A Global-Smart Professional - Embracing Change
We summarize these 3 points as Learn long-long, Heart big-big, and Go far-far. These graduate outcomes support our belief in putting our students at the heart of all we do and are aimed at preparing students for their next phase of career and/or further studies.
You may have heard of our national movement known as “SkillsFuture” with emphasis for students to attain mastery of skills required by the industry and engage in lifelong learning. The advice for students is not to pursue a degree for the sake of paper qualification but to focus on acquiring and developing skills needed by industry to ensure employability and job career prospects.
We are actively looking for industry mentors to help our students gain experience and exposure in a particular industry. If you aware of companies that would like to take in our students as interns be it Malaysia or other countries or your own company would like to do so, please let me know so I can connect you to the person in charge at NP.
Once again thank you for inviting us. We wish NAA Malaysia many more years of great friendships among members and contributions to the community. We hope you will attract more young members to continue your passion and good work as part of your renewal process. Wishing all a most fulfilling year ahead !
